Library campaigners set to protest

Members and supporters of the Save Lincs Libraries group are planning on gathering outside the Lincolnshire County Council’s offices, on Newland, in Lincoln, from 9.15am, to coincide with a meeting at 10am which will discuss the topic.

The scrutiny committee is being recommended to approve the plan to remove 30 libraries – potentially including Kirton, Donington and Coningsby – out of the current network and ask volunteers to run them.

Spokesman for Save Lincolnshire Libraries Julie Harrison said: “This plan may sound familiar. It’s basically the one agreed by the executive committee in December 2013 and stopped in its tracks by the High Court in July 2014.

“Yet again, the council has failed to listen to local people and failed to accept any other way forward. It has also failed to keep its manifesto promise to ‘continue a countywide library network with better access and opening hours.

“Thousands of local people have already shown their opposition to this plan and Save Lincolnshire Libraries now invites those who can to come along to the county offices and make their views clear once again.”

The executive committee are set to discuss the issue on February 3.
