Humble, naive young actress Peggy Sawyer has come to audition for a new Broadway musical.
Due to her nervousness, she arrives late and misses her chance to join the chorus.
However, she catches the eye of a famous director, who Peggy her big break.
The show’s aging leading lady, Dorothy Brock, quickly grows to dislike Peggy and when Ms Brock falls and breaks her ankle on opening night, the show appears doomed for closure.
