Next week, Louth Playgoers Theatre welcomes back The New London Opera Group, with a brand new fully-staged production of the last Gilbert and Sullivan opera, The Grand Duke.
First performed in 1896, it focuses on a theatrical company plotting to overthrow the mean and despotic Grand Duke Rudolph of Pfenig-Halbpfenig.
Gilbert’s intricately worked plot includes many hilarious devices, involving sausage rolls, card games and the entire cast changing into ancient Greek costume.
While Sullivan’s score scales new heights of wit and invention and is the most “continental” he wrote for the Savoy, including beguiling Viennese waltzes and a riotous can-can.
The Grand Duke will play for three nights - June 26, 27 and 28 at 7.30pm
