ONE of the most impressive French films of recent times will be shown at Louth Film Club next week.

Of Gods and Men will be screened at The Playhouse Cinema on Monday, August 20.

Directed by Xavier Beauvois the film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Cannes film Festival.

It is a powerful drama based on real-life events in Algeria in the 1990s, during the country’s civil war.

The monks at a Trappist monastery in the Atlas Mountains live in harmony with their Muslim neighbours, for whom they run a free medical clinic, but threatened by jihadist insurgents they must decide whether to stay or be evacuated.

Of Gods And Men, in Arabic and French with subtitles, is Certificate 15. The show starts at 7.30pm and non-members are welcome, paying the normal cinema ticket prices.
