Caistor Cricket Club 1st team turned in a magnificent performance, their best of the season, to defeat top of the table Haxey at Brigg Road on Saturday by seven wickets.

Once again it was their outstanding Sri Lankan all rounder Sahan Wijerathne who won them the game.

Caistor skipper Liam Wood won the toss and put Haxey in. Tim Brown soon dismissed Oliver Tonks for three and then a stand ensued between Graham Attenborough and Ian Leech.

When Sahan Wijerathne came into the attack from the Brigg Road end, however, he started creating havoc with his off breaks.

He saw off Attenborough, caught and bowled for 24, and then had Leech well caught by Paul Jackson for 25.

Dangerman Tom Wraith with two centuries under his belt this season, was bowled by Sahan Wijerathne for 11 and from then on it was a rapid slide downhill for the visitors and Haxey were all out for 137.

Sahan Wijerathne’s impressive spell saw him finish with figures of 6 for 35 from his highly impressive 19 overs.

Tim Brown supported him with 3 for 47 from 11 overs, meanwhile Paul Jackson had 1 for 45 from a marathon 20 overs.

When Caistor replied, Ryan McKitton went cheaply for nine, but his fellow opener Peter Briggs held one end secure.

Sahan Wijerathne joined him and together they put on a stand of 107 runs to take Caistor to the brink of victory.

Briggs went for 43 and Sahan for 67 as Caistor romped home on 138 for three.
