Market Rasen golf: Vic tops Ellmore Cup qualifying spots

The competition season at Market Rasen Golf Club is now in full swing and course conditions continue to improve day by day.

The men’s section played the Ellmore Cup, a medal competition for ages 50 or over with the top eight going through to the knockout stages of the cup.

Vic Blanchard was the clear winner by three shots with a nett score of 67 (85-18) with runner-up Gavin Johnstone carding a nett 70 (91-21).

Ian Ribey (85-14) was just a further stroke back in third place, two better off than fourth-placed Tommy Mitchell (95-22), while John Vernam went round in nett 74 (97-23).

Ian Mawer claimed sixth spot with 95–20=75 from Paul Olley (90–15=75) in seventh, and Darren Parkinson took the final qualifying spot with a score of 87-12=75.

* The Fullers London Pride Gold Medal drew an entry of 71 men.

New member Steve Maplethorpe headed the field with a superb nett 60, playing off a handicap of 20 which was duly cut to 16.

Matthew Allison took second position with 81-17=64, Mark Codd was four shots further back with 79-11=68 and Jacob Morley (76-5=71) completed the top four.

The best gross prize was won by Paul Baker.

* The Club is holding an Open Day on Sunday, June 7 and invite both golfers and non-golfers to go along and see the facilities now available, including the recently established floodlit driving range.

Various fun competitions will take place for those interested in trying their hand at the sport.

This day is part of Sport England’s Get into Golf project to attract newcomers to the game of golf.
