Brigg Hockey Club Ladies’ First XI opened their Yorkshire League season with a 4-1 win over Halifax at Brumby Hall.

The half-time lead was a slender 1-0 margin, but three second half goals confirmed Brigg’s superiority over their West Yorkshire opponents.

Scorers in a very open and entertaining match were Corinne Maddy, with a brace, Lauren Bryan and Helena Palin.

‘Dame of the Game’ was Palin for her composure in the circle as well as her ability to mix stick skills and raw pace to good effect. Brigg’s best spell came in the opening 10 minutes of the second half when their three goals established a decisive lead.

* Brigg Men’s First XI suffered their second successive defeat, this time by a worrying 10-1 margin at home to Teeside club Stockton.

The result leaves Brigg with work to do to get away from the foot of the table before the season really gets under way.

Stockton, as last year, are expected to be among the high flyers in the high calibre North Division Two League.

* Brigg Men’s second team went down 6-4 to Ben Rhydding Third XI, from Ilkley, in Yorkshire League Division Two.

Former Welsh International David Cutter, now a veteran, was very much the midfield brains in a youthful visiting side.

Brigg’s goals came from David Baggott (2), Mark Skinner and Jon Whall.

* Brigg Men’s thirds won 1-0 at home to Huddersfield Dragons thanks to an early goal from Simon Weightman, while Brigg Ladies’ Second XI had a hard-fought 1-0 win at Huddersfield, and the men’s fourth Xl lost 6-2 at Doncaster Sixth XI.
