Market Rasen jockey Duran Fentiman has claimed two decent wins to bring his tally this flat race season to five.
Former De Aston School student Fentiman rides for Malton trainer Tim Easterby, and in the Close House Classified Stakes for three-year-olds at Newcastle, Mystic Mirage picked up really well under Fentiman to win by more than a length.
The pace was not that quick in the early stages of the race, but the 15/8 favourite just needed to be kept up to his work in the end to win.
Easterby said: “Hopefully he should go on from this now he has won.”
The rain arrived in time for another Fentiman ride at Newcastle. Kenny The Captain loves a galloping track with some cut in the ground and with everything in his favour, the 20/1 chance recaptured his juvenile form to record a fourth career success.
Kenny The Captain attempted to make all up the centre of the track, and when challenged by the smooth travelling Kommander Kirkup, Fentiman asked for more.
His mount rallied to fend off the runner-up, even though he was headed again inside the final furlong.
Fentiman and Kenny are booked to pair up again at Haydock on Thursday, but there will need to be give in the ground if the duo are to succeed again.
