Les triumphs in final battle to lift the Birkett Trophy

THE Birkett Trophy is a knockout matchplay competition between the players who finished in the top eight in the Harmsworth Trophy Club Championship and for once, Roy Knowles had to play second fiddle to Les Brumpton, who beat him in the final.

The Banovallum Bowl mixed foursome competition was keenly contested and John and Nicola Hewson were extremely confident having recorded an excellent score of 66. They remained in the driving seat until Margaret Dixon sank a 15 foot putt on the 18th to record a fantastic 65 with her partner Dave King. Third place went to Kim Robinson and Colin Law, with Sue Lambert and Stuart Britton finishing with the best gross score.

The Timms Cup bogey competition was originally scheduled for August 27, but was abandoned due to a torrential hail storm. It was re-scheduled on September 17, when Dave King followed up his success in the Banovallum Bowl with a score of +4, which gave him third place and Bob Davison continued his excellent form to finish runner-up on countback with +4.

However, neither could compete with Mark Briggs who won the Timms Cup with a score of +6.

As the competition season draws to a close, focus is on the junior team, which plays in the County Final against Belton Park on Sunday, September 25 at Elsham Golf Club.
