A race-day to celebrate a Market Rasen girl who has battled a rare form of cancer is to be held at the town’s racecourse this weekend.

The family of Claudia Burkill has organised the day with the backing of supporters and businesses. The occasion is still going ahead even though the eight-year-old, who requires round-the-clock care, is currently in hospital in Nottingham after being re-admitted last week.

The race meeting on Sunday is the ‘Claudia’s Cause’ family fun day. A fantastic array of entertainment is being laid on, including a circus workshop, obstacle course, bouncy castle, wall climbing, face painter, fairground stalls with prizes, a children’s roundabout, swing boats, chair o’ planes and a jazz band – plus the Kids Love The Races roadshow.

Adult visitors will be invited to donate £2 per accompanied child (aged 5 to 17 years) to ‘Claudia’s Cause’ when they come through the racecourse entrances.

Six of the seven races have so far been named. They are: Friends Of Claudia’s Cause Novice Hurdle; JL Telemarketing Ltd Novices’ Hurdle; Mark Bates Ltd Handicap Chase; Smart-GF Kids Beacon Of Hope Handicap Hurdle; Office Friends Celebration Handicap Chase; Ellie And Charlie Clay Handicap Hurdle.

The seventh and yet to be named race is also a handicap hurdle.

Pip Kirkby, General Manager, of Market Rasen Racecourse, said: “The fixture on Sunday August 3 is truly a very special occasion and we are delighted to welcome the family and friends of little Claudia for the ‘Claudia’s Cause’ family fun day.

“We are all praying that Claudia pulls through the latest challenge to her health. She is an immensely brave little girl and her family have been hugely supportive during very difficult times.”

The first race on Sunday is at 2.20pm. Gates open two hours before. Admission to the Family Enclosure is £7.50; in Tattersalls it’s £14; while the Premier Enclosure is £19. Savings of up to 25% on adult admission can be made when purchasing tickets in advance. All accompanied children under the age of 18 will be admitted free of charge. Tickets for all racing fixtures can be bought in advance online at or on 0844 579 3009.
