HOCKEY- Brigg move into top spot after Bradford victory

Bradford 1–2 Brigg

Brigg Hockey Club Mens 1st team went to the top of the Yorkshire Premier League with a 2-1 win at Bradford.

The team’s slick, fast hockey style was put to the test on a very slippy and slow Bradford pitch.

Brigg travelled without a few key players, notably Harry Cadwalladar, who had picked up a back injury.

From the start Bradford were determined to work hard and press Brigg into their own half. Brigg however maintained their composure and replied with several aerial balls from Tom North and forward runs by Andy Reid.

However, uncharacteristically sloppy play provided a goal for Bradford and had the away side considering a tactical change.

Brigg responded and started to play better, with good link play between Simon Dixon, Joe Coburn and skipper Andy Dixon.

Brigg won a short corner just before half time, which Dixon slotted in to the top right side netting to continue his good run of form in set piece situations.

There were then some impressive attacks from Bradford and Brigg were largely grateful to several good saves from Colin Lattimore.

Saves by Lattimore came in most areas of the goal, notably a shot heading into the bottom left corner with the Bradford strikers bearing down on him. Both teams contributed in an end to end period of the game before half-time.

Bradford continued to press again from the start of the second half and a sluggish Brigg side conceded multiple short corners, with the Brigg defence looking to repel the Bradford manoeuvres.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate for much of the second period, however with the last hit of the game, Brigg skipper Andy Dixon turned the match around.

Dixon rolled round the centre back at the top of the Bradford circle to slot a reverse stick winner in the bottom corner, leaving Bradford devastated and an under par Brigg relieved to take the three points with a 2–1 win.

Brigg Men’s 2nd had their best win of the season when they beat Halifax 1st team 6-2 while the third team had a 3-3 draw with Lincoln Roses.

Brigg entertain both Sheffield Bankers 3 and Leeds University 3 next weekend at The Pods astro with 2PM start on both Saturday and Sunday.
