HOCKEY: Brigg Ladies start the season with win against Leeds

Brigg 4-2- Leeds

Brigg Hockey Club Ladies 1st team’s first game of the season was at home against Leeds in the Yorkshire Premier League.

Brigg started the game strongly, passing the ball fluently, but couldn’t execute the final ball to create a goal.

Against the run of play, Leeds broke through the defence and scored a good goal with a shot into the top corner from the top of the circle. Brigg knew that they deserved something and within a few minutes got a goal back. Worked from defence, the attack passed the ball between them and with a neat lay-off, Sarah Clapp grabbed her first goal of the season to make it 1-1.

Brigg grew in confidence, and attacked with purpose, a chance falling to Libby Eagles who hit a rising ball into the side netting. Brigg passed the ball more freely and soon had another chance on goal, a short corner which Angela Coggon smashed between the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 2-1 to Brigg.

However a slight lapse of composure from the defence, which was unable to clear the ball, saw Leeds squeeze the ball through a small gap into the back of the Brigg goal to make it 2-2 at half time.

Brigg started the second half with some tight, quick play down both flanks and created another chance with last year’s top goalscorer Jaki Phillips scoring a diving goal to put Brigg back in the lead again.

Brigg then made the match safe when Lois Haigh with a neat finish put her shot past the sprawled keeper on the floor to make the final score 4-2 to Brigg and an excellent start to the season.
