THE highlight of the mens’ golf year at Market Rasen was played on Saturday, June 26, as players with a handicap of 18+ competed for the Young Cup. Mike Archer added to his success in mixed competitions by winning by four clear shots with a nett 66 off 24 handicap. Cliff Johnson was second with 70 off 24 handicap, one shot in front of Gary Crane off 25 handicap.
Sunday saw the Harmsworth Trophy played over two rounds, which doubles as the Club Championship.
The nett competition was won by junior captain Harry Crowther, with excellent rounds of 65 and 68, just one shot ahead of another junior, Jamie Codd.
On the hottest day of the year, Roy Knowles made his intentions clear with a morning round of 72, one over par, a shot ahead of Alan Ward.
However, when a lot of competitors wilted in the heat of the afternoon, Roy surged ahead with a superb two under par 69. His combined score of 141 secured the Championship by five shots from Alan Ward, with last years’ winner, Les Brumpton, in third place.
Roy becomes the first player to win the Championship four times and his two round score is likely to be the lowest ever recorded in the competition. Pictured is Roy being presented the Harmsworth Trophy by Club Captain, Peter Bray.
The Men’s A team has played four matches so far, winning one, halving one and losing two. This is quite encouraging as several lower handicap golfers are no longer playing for the team and half the team is now made up of Juniors.
