It was with some excitement that Market Rasen and District Golf Club’s Ladies section appointed Joan Woodcock as club president for the year 2014/2015.

The post, until this year, has been held by a gentleman member of the club.

And it may be a first in England that a daughter has followed in her father’s footsteps as Club President- Reg Ellmore was President from 1985-1988 and also held the positions of Captain in 1971, Senior Captain in 1978 and 2001.

Reg also held the positions of Club Secretary and Competition Secretary.

Joan joined the club in 1964. At that time, the club boasted only nine holes and she saw the club evolve from 9 to 12 holes, 12 to 15 holes and then finally from 15 to 18 holes.

During her 50 years of membership, she has
served in many posts, including Ladies’ Secretary, Treasurer and Ladies Captain in 1972, her Captaincy overlapping her father’s Captaincy in 1971.

The Phillips Family Trophy was won by them whilst they were both captains of the club.

She brings a wealth of knowledge of Market Rasen and District Golf Club to all members new and old.

Meanwhile, it has been a busy spring season for the Ladies Section.

The Annual Spring dinner was well attended and the Ladies were entertained by Sean Sparling with his close up magic tricks and judging from the laughter in the clubhouse his jokes were well received.

And, as president, Joan Woodcock awarded prizes to winners of some winter competitions.

Winter Eclectic: Division 1 Handicaps 0-25 - 1 Sue Borthwick 62.7, 2 Ronnie Sullivan 64.5, 3 Jane Salt 65.6; Division 2 Handicaps 26-36 - 1 Sue Would 67.5, 2 Shelagh Mitchell 68.1, 3 Rhona Bradford 71.6.

The winners of the winter league were Sue Borthwick and Helen Grinham, having beaten Bridget Holmes
and Aileen Sellars in an exciting and hard fought final match.
