Up-and-coming young athlete Molly-Anne Welton ran a fine tactical race at the Northern Cross Country Relays at Graves Park, in Sheffield.
The De Aston School pupil, representing the Sheffield and Dearne Club, was running first leg in the under 13s girls’ race over a 1,800m course.
Welton tucked into fourth place from the start, but at about half-race distance, the toils of the 250m gradient began to break up the pack and the Searby runner spotted her chance.
She took the lead and began a race-long battle with Lilli Carr (Keighley and Craven) as the pair swapped the lead.
Only a sprint to the finish would split the two athletes, and Welton went with 150m to go, her determination on the day earning her first place with a time of 5min 51secs, the fastest time over the three legs.
