Course made soft by the constant rain

HEAVY rain over the last week was always going to make the going soft at Market Rasen Racecourse’s meet on Sunday.

And in the opening race, the Don Noble Celebrating 50 Years Handicap Hurdle Div 1, this suited P A Kirby trained Avanos best, beating favourite Changing the Guard into second with Favours Brave third.

Kirby repeated the trick in the second race, the Don Noble Celebrating 50 Years Handicap Hurdle Div 2, this time sending Iktiview to post, who led the field home ahead of Allformary and Lawgiver.

The Novices’ Hurdle was won by Trop Fort, beating off the challenge from Tom Scudamore ridden Grand Exit and A P Mccoy’s Lucky Landing.

The Tom Halliday Memorial Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle was taken by favourite Dirty Bertie, ahead of Dipity Doo Dah and Michael Chapman’s Galley Slave.

Favourite Fennis Boy then won the Get Well Soon Derek Thompson Beginners’ Chase, leading home Lion on the Prowl and Cool Star.

With six non runners, only four horses went to post in the Donald Noble Memorial Handicap Chase, won by Taffy Thomas, coming in ahead of Delganny Gunner and Basoda.

Bobowen was first home in the Manny Bernstein Freephone 0800 821821 Handicap Chase, running clear of Blue Hills and Peak Seasons.

With the crowd splitting their time between watching the racing and Murray vs Federer at Wimbledon, the final race, the Don Noble Your Local Bookmaker Standard Open NH Flat Race, was won by favourite Mulligan’s Man, home ahead of Be Devious and Langley House.

The next race meeting at Market Rasen is a big one, the Betfred Summer Plate & The Journal Ladies Day, taking place on Saturday July 21.
