Brigg fight back to after falling behind

BRIGG Men’s Hockey Club 1st team travelled to Doncaster for their final friendly fixture of the pre-season recently.

Brigg started brightly, applying many of the things practised at training and created good chances, which they were unfortunate not to convert.

The first half flew by with nothing notable happening, leaving the scores level at half time.

Following the break, Brigg pressed hard and fell behind to a scrambled goal.

This infuriated Brigg and they pushed hard to equalise. The scores were soon level as David Baggott made a commanding run down the left, along the base line beating three players to pull the ball back to the waiting Brigg Captain Andy Dixon, who smashed the ball home.

Brigg now had control of the game and doubled their lead through David Jollands, who somehow slotted the ball into the bottom corner, much to the surprise of every other player on the pitch.

Soon after Brigg were unfortunate not to add another following a superb touch and turn from man of the match Oliver Reid, who saw his reverse stick shot crash into the post and go wide.

Following this Brigg played out the remaining few minutes to secure the win 2-1.

Brigg play at a new venue with the opening of the new Yorkshire League season.

The club’s teams will all play at the new astroturf pitches at Appleby Frodingham Sports Club in Scunthorpe, the men moving from Quibell Park and the ladies from Winterton.

Training has already started and new players male and female, young and adult are all welcome at the sessions on Monday evenings.

Times will be from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for juniors and from 8pm to 9pm for adults. Prospective new players should just turn up on the night, or contact club chairman Andrew Norris on 07734 590525 for more details.

Both ladies and men sections run four sides in the Yorkshire League.

The men have a new captain in Andy Dixon, who after three seasons with Chester in the North League has returned to the local area.

He takes over from Andy Burnett while Dan Garfoot continues as 2nd XI captain, Stuart Smith as 3rd XI captain, with veteran Joe Pliachynski taking over the 4th XI from Jack Richards who remains as fixture secretary.

Details on the club are on Facebook (Brigg Hockey) or on twitter @brigghockeyclub.

Brigg Men’s 1st XI play their first home Yorkshire Premier League match this Saturday, September 24, against Driffield – 2pm start at Brumby Hall.

One familiar face will be missing from the Brigg ranks as veteran Stuart Brumby, who won 100 caps for Lincolnshire, steps down from 1st team action and will play in the 2nd team in Division 2.
