Market Rasen Under 12s set a dominating tone from the start on Sunday after travelling to play Grimsby Borough, and maintained this for most of the game.
Rasen made a blistering start and were 3-0 up within 10 minutes. Henry James reacted quickly to fire home a bouncing ball, left-footed, into the bottom left corner from close range, and soon after Josh Trushell made it two with a well-taken shot from the right side of the box.
Not content with his first goal for Market Rasen this season, James added a second when he converted Trushell’s cross from the right with a clinical first-time shot which scorched into the bottom left corner.
Rasen continued to press for more goals. Alex Aistrop attempted an overhead kick before scoring the fourth for the visitors.
A good cross from Christopher Allen into the box found Aistrop, who took the shot with his first touch and found the net.
A strong drive from Jack Edser then saw Rasen press again, but the home defence cleared for a throw-in. Solid defence and confident forward runs from man-of-the-match Luke Griffiths saw Rasen remain 4-0 up at half-time.
Starting the second half as confidently as they had the first, Rasen produced good attacking football and Luke Bennett had two good chances in the box. He then put James through one-on-one with a well-directed pass, but the Grimsby keeper closed him down well.
Grimsby reduced the deficit when Rasen failed to clear and left keeper Phil Bett exposed to Grimsby’s striker, who put the ball past him.
Rasen pushed for further goals. James made further good runs along the right wing and crossed into the box to no avail, while Allen had two attempts on goal, and Trushell’s shot was clawed off the goal-line.
When needed, the Rasen defence remained solid as the hosts sealed a 4-1 win.
