Market Rasen Town 0-1 Cleethorpes Town
Football returned to Rase Park this week as Market Rasen Town FC kicked off their pre–season campaign with the first of three fixtures in preparation for the new Lincs League season.
Included in the Rasen starting line up was former Horncastle Town front man, Will Carter and ex Doncaster Rovers junior Nathan Ashbridge.
Cleethorpes Town, last year’s champions of the Lincs League, were without recent signing and former Rasen skipper Aaron Greenbeck, missing with a thigh injury.
Cleethorpes superior sharpness from starting their campaign numerous weeks in advance of Rasen was evident in opening exchanges.
However, Rasen were competant at the back with Drew Norburn and Jake Wade dealing with the early forays of the Cleethorpes front line.
Cleethorpes opened the scoring on the half hour mark when a slick Cleethorpes move ended with a neat finish from close range.
Rasen had a great chance to equilise shortly after when a good move saw Will Carter’s hold up play create an opening for last year’s leading goalscorer Nathan Smith. Smith shot cannoned off the keeper to safety.
Rasen introduced another new signing, Steve Adcock, at right back in the second half along with Ryan Penniston, who replaced the faultless Drew Norburn at centre back and Rasen reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.
Rasen became more of an attacking force and Nathan Smith and Will Carter went close to equilising.
Nathan Ashbridge encouraged the Cleethorpes defence into a rash challenge, which earned a penalty for the home side. Unfortunately Scott Lowman’s strike was well saved by the Clee keeper.
A late Kyle Paul strike, which had the Clee keeper in action again, was Rasen’s last hope of an equiliser, with the game ending in favour of the visitors.
Rasen are at home again next week when Gainsborough Town (Tuesday July 24) and Lincoln United (Thursday July 26) come to Rase Park for 6.45pm kick offs.
