FOOTBALL: Comfortable win for Brigg Town

Brigg Town FC 3-0 Carlton Town

Brigg Town enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win in their home encounter with Carlton Town after a disappointing mid-week defeat at home in the Doodson Sport Cup against Sheffield.

A first minute attack down the left wing against Carlton won a free kick outside the penalty area, but Liam Davis struck his shot over the bar.

Paul Grimes linked well with Danny Buttle down the left, but the attack came to nothing. A poor clearance from the Brigg penalty area let in Carlton, but a snap shot from 20-yards out went over the crossbar.

Brigg scored the important first goal of the game after 27 minutes of play when Paul Grimes got possession of a long free kick played forward by Jamie Green, before releasing the ball to Liam Davis who drove a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

In the next minute, Ryan Paczkowski got free down the left and cut inside before driving his fierce shot across the face of the goal and out at the far side of the pitch.

Brigg then increased their lead after 34 minutes when Danny Buttle went past his marker on the left wing and was brought down by a late challenge from the goalkeeper, earning a penalty kick for which he got up to drive into the back of the net.

Brigg then played the ball well out of defence with Ryan Paczkowski and Paul Grimes setting up another opening for Liam Davis, but his volley went over the bar.

Carlton started the second half well, but Jamie Green produced a good save low down. When Brigg attacked, Paul Grimes and Liam Davis were a constant threat.

Ryan Paczkowski went close to increasing the lead after a free kick was awarded for a foul on Paul Grimes, but the third goal was scored after 70 minutes with a delightful move down the left wing.

After Liam Davis was tripped, the free kick was played down the touchline by Paul Grimes for Danny Buttle to deliver a deep cross to the far post where Ryan Paczkowski met the ball to knock it into the back of the net.

Brigg continued to press and were unlucky not to add further goals, with Bruno Holden, on as substitute for Ryan Paczkowski, having one strike deflected wide and another against the crossbar.

Carlton continued to press to get something from the game, but Jamie Green made another point blank save in the dying minutes to ensure a clean sheet was maintained.

This Saturday, Brigg travel to high flying Sutton Coldfield Town, who play their fixtures on an artificial surface
