FOOTBALL: Brigg win lifts them into top half

Brigg Town FC 3–1 Kidsgrove Athletic

Brigg Town FC continued their improved form with a 3-1 home win over Kidsgrove Athletic.

Jamie Green returned in goal after a lengthy lay off through injury and Chas Fisher was on the bench along with Adam Lee and Sam Downey.

The visitors played the whole game with one player short but still put up a firm resistance and in Liam Shotton possessed a striker with pace and skill.

Inside the first minute of the game, Shotton took possession on the right wing and went past Scott Hellewell before sending a fierce shot into the side netting from an acute angle.

Brigg settled quickly and took an early lead after five minutes of play when Josh Davies was given time and space to surge forward from midfield before striking a shot on target which beat the goalkeeper before hitting the crossbar and falling into the back of the net.

Then a right wing corner kick from Josh Davies was played across the penalty area, but a free kick was conceded.

Brigg added a second goal after 20 minutes when Liam Dickens made a strong forward run from his own half before laying the ball off for Danny Buttle to drive it into the bottom corner of the net.

Kidsgrove reduced the arrears 10 minutes later when Jamie Green was beaten to the ball at the edge of his penalty area and a looping shot went into the back of the unguarded goal.

Kidsgrove grew in confidence and went close to equalising the score when two shots were blocked by defenders on the Brigg goal line.

Brigg introduced Adam Lee and Chas Fisher as subs for Josh Davies and Martyn Gee. They gradually took more control of the second half with the efforts of their opponents being subdued through tiredness.

A free kick for Brigg was played into the goal area but scooped away. The visiting goalkeeper made another good save to clear the ball after a neat piece of combination play between Alex Flett and Ryan Paczkowski.

Another fierce shot from Liam Dickens was beaten down and the ball was next cleared off the goal line from Ryan Paczkowski’s header.

The third goal came ten minutes from time from the penalty spot after Liam Davis was knocked to the floor from behind. Paczkowsk struck a firm spot kick into the roof of the net.

In the closing minutes, Liam Dickens went close to adding a fourth goal after receiving a return pass from Liam Davis inside the penalty area but the ball was deflected over the crossbar.

The three points lifted Brigg into the top half of the league table but this Saturday they have to travel for a difficult game away at Newcastle Town in Staffordshire. The next home game is on Boxing Day when Kings Lynn visit for the first time.
