On a bitterly cold weekend, Market Rasen Town Cricket Club’s 2nd XIs put in a pair of displays to warm the cockles of those supporters hardy enough to brave the arctic conditions.
The 2nd XI beat Outcasts 2nds by 63 runs in Lincs League 3 and the Sunday 2nd XI cruised to a six wicket win before 4pm at Hykeham in the Major Hoult Cup.
Unfortunately the Sunday 1st XI were unable to overcome Cherry Willingham in the Lincoln League Premier Division, losing by seven wickets with a few overs remaining at Rase Park.
Invited to bat first on Saturday, the 2nd XI compiled an imposing total of 197 for 6 against Outcasts 2nds. Rasen’s innings was built on a solid foundation of 102 from Jon Stephenson (59) and Andy Richley (36), compiled in 27 overs.
A brief wobble once the openers had fallen saw Rasen reduced to 115 for 4, but Dave Papworth (41) and Liam Scales (30) righted the ship and some timely shot-making from Seb Darke at the end took Rasen to within sight of 200.
Outcasts’ reply also began solidly, with David Hobson (46) and Danny Taylor putting on 57 for the first wicket. But once Hobson found himself cleaned up by the impressive Seb Darke (1 for 7 from 7 overs), it was simply a question of whether Rasen would have enough overs to bowl Outcasts out.
Rasen’s spinners again played a major part with Karl Bierlein (3 for 50) and Nic Keast (2 for 12) working their way through the lineup, before Simon Bunn (2 for 34) and Andy Richley mopped up the tail with five overs to spare.
The Sunday 1st XI found runs hard to come by against Cherry Willingham for the second weekend in a row, as they were only able to post 151 for 4 from their 40 overs. Matt Rutherford (51) and Dale Christie (48) scoring the bulk of the side’s runs.
A determined display in the field made the visitors work hard for the runs, but Rasen were unable to prevent the visitors from passing their total with seven wickets and three overs to spare.
The Sunday 2nd XI got their season off to the best possible start at Hykeham. Choosing to bowl first, Rasen’s young opening bowlers; Liam Entwhistle (1 for 24) and Sam Williams (2 for 19) gave their side the best possible start, removing both of the home side’s openers in the early-going.
Their excellent work laid the way for Richard Limmer to clean up, as the all-rounder snaffled 4 for 6 to see Hykeham bundled out for 80 in the 18th over.
Rasen’s reply didn’t get off to the best of starts, with the top four back in the hutch within the first six overs. However, with the score already on 31 the promise of a quick finish was too much for Limmer to turn down, as he followed up his display with the ball with an aggressive 47 not out, smearing the ball to all parts of North Hykeham. He received excellent support from Sam Williams and the pair saw Rasen home in the 16th over.
This Bank Holiday weekend sees five league games for the clubs’ senior sides; on Saturday the 1st XI host Caistor Town in the Lincs Prem (1pm start) and the 2nd XI head to Old Lincolnians in Lincs League 3 (1.30pm start).
