Matt Rutherford capped a bumper Bank Holiday weekend for Market Rasen Town Cricket Club with a man of the match performance against Barton Town at Rase Park on Monday.
Rasen’s skipper made the only half-century of the match, making 73, and then bagged 5 for 18 as he and Gary Bierlein bundled Barton out for 129 to hand the home team victory by 58 runs.
Invited to bat first on a glorious afternoon, Rasen’s batting was never allowed to dominate proceedings, with Barton continually chipping away.
Whilst seven of the home side’s batsmen reached double figures, the only player to cash in was Rutherford, who was the last man out for 73 from 102 balls, having guided Rasen to 187 for 8 from their 50 overs. Rob Brice was the pick of the visiting attack, taking 3 for 49 from 13 overs.
John Knapton and Dan Tolson made a decent fist of things as Rutherford opted to open with the spin of Tom Boryszczuk and Gary Bierlein, 4 for 41.
Boryszczuk could not match his feats of Saturday however, and it was Bierlein who made the first breakthrough, dismissing the Barton skipper, John Knapton, 23, with 49 on the board.
Dan Tolson, 28, and Patrick Hughes, 20, also made starts, but with none of the top three going on, Barton’s task became that much harder, especially once Rutherford hit his stride.
Rasen’s skipper ripped through the heart of the Barton lineup, triggering a collapse from 68 for 1 to 99 for 7, from which the visitors never recovered, eventually succumbing to 129 all out in the 44th over.
This weekend sees the 1st XI host Bracebridge Heath in the Lincs League Premier Division, 1pm start, and the 2nd XI visit South Kelsey in Division Three. The Sunday 1st XI head to Boston and the Sunday 2nd XI host Aisthorpe for a re-match of last weekend’s cup final, both 2pm starts.
