With spring in full swing the new cricket season is only a week away and in preparation Market Rasen Town CC faced a Scunthorpe Premier Division side to put them through their paces.

Following a warm week the cricketing gods were not smiling on Rase Park as the Spring weather changed for an all more autumnal feel. Winning the toss and batting first Rasen opened with last season’s pairing of Bradford & Bell.

Looking for early season form both men looked comfortable in the early exchanges, but with a green wicket and low cloud Scunthorpe all-rounder Ramesh Chand claimed the wicket of both men before the 10th over.

Market Rasen batsmen Charlie Scales was next to the crease and produced a mature and confident display of batting against both a solid Scunthorpe attack and changeable weather conditions. Driving the score on Charlie was helped with support from Papworth and Christie before chipping one to mid-on for a well-deserved 30.

The swashbuckling Christie did what he does best, producing boundaries and chances in equal measure he helped Rasen reach a defendable score of over 150. Captain Rutherford looked in promising form with runs coming quickly off the bat.

Breaking for tea Rasen would have been confident that a score of 150 plus was competitive, but just before retaking the field the heavens opened and covers were brought onto the field. After a rain shower lasting 30 minutes the games was reduced to a Twenty 20 format.

Scunthorpe was set a target of 110 and with rain still falling the fielding conditions were challenging for the home side. Opening the bowling for Rasen were medium pacers Penniston and Fussey. Tight bowling from them both reduced Scunthorpe to 20 for 2 off the first six overs and a close game was likely before a more persistent shower ended hopes of finish.

The visiting captain Ian Snowdon finished the games with a mighty 20 off five balls to close Scunthorpe’s innings on 40 for 2 off 10 overs.

This weekend will see the start of the cricket season for the senior sections of the club.

Market Rasen Town 1st XI kick off their second season in the Lincolnshire ECB Premier at Rase Park for a 12noon start against Grimsby Town. The 2nd XI travel to Grimsby Town for the reverse fixture. Sunday will see Market Rasen welcome Caythorpe CC to Rase Park for the Sunday Division 2 clash.
