A narrow home defeat costs Caistor third place

CAISTOR Cricket Club missed out on the chance to go into third place in the Lincolnshire Premier League when they lost narrowly at Brigg Road to Messingham by two wickets.

Batting first Caistor were bowled out for a disappointing 98 on their own ground.

Peter Briggs went early bowled for eight and Nathan Davies also went cheaply before Sri Lankan Sahan Wijerathne found support from Tom Boryszczuk.

The latter added 19 and Wijerathne went for 38, bowled by Andy Langford.

At 73 for 4 Caistor looked to make a challenging score on a ground that had been saturated by Friday’s downpour.

With great credit to the ground staff the ground was playable by lunchtime on Saturday.

The outfield was nevertheless slow, and anything approaching 140 would have been difficult for Messingham.

Caistor’s middle and lower order could not provide many runs however, and the final target of 98 looked all too vulnerable.

Messingham, last season’s champions, made hard work of it however and with Paul Jackson putting in a determined effort to record 4 for 41 and Sahan claiming 3 for 36, Caistor looked to be in with a chance.

Keeble with 29 offered resistance enabling Messingham to reach their target on 101 for 7 for a three wicket win that put them into second place in the table behind leaders Haxey.

In Division One third-placed South Kelsey’s hopes of gaining promotion back to the premier league at the first time of asking gained a real boost when they took maximum points from a seven wicket home win over Hykeham.

Meanwhile second-in-the-table Broughton didn’t get a single point from a shock defeat at the hands of Louth 2nds.

Spinner Lol Waghorn was for the second week running among the wickets, this time bagging six. Scores were Hykeham 124 ( Waghorn 6-39), South Kelsey 128 for three.

In Division 2 promotion chasing Caistor 2nds had their game away to Cleethorpes 3rds rained off.

In Division 3 there was a very important six-wicket win for South Kelsey 2nds over bottom team Old Lincolnians, a result that keeps Kelsey well clear of the relegation zone. Scores were-Old Lincolnians 82 for nine, South Kelsey 2nds 84 for six.
