Grammars - Tories to blame for schools

Edward Leigh’s letter quite rightly criticised the demise of grammar schools, recalling it as one of the worst post-war policy decisions.

What he doesn’t say is that it was Margaret Thatcher who was responsible for some 3,000 grammar schools transferring to comprehensives, something that obviously didn’t figure in his undying support for her a few years later.

When she became expendable, his support then moved to Michael Heseltine, an arch supporter of our EU membership and who currently envisages our joining the euro.

He’ll find it hard to reconcile but there is an election around the corner that allows some latitude in compromising principles.
