At the moment the low oil price makes fracking less attractive to exploration and development companies.
The price of oil will go back up again. There is an opportunity now for a proper regulatory framework to be put in place - so that when extraction becomes economically viable residents and the wider community have comprehensive environmental and economic protection.
Simply saying ‘No to fracking’ is not the answer. It may be sufficient to see off current fracking proposals - but it is not a long term solution.
A tight system of regulation needs to be brought in - so that the next time there is urgent pressure from government and fracking companies to extract gas from under our communities - the proper controls are already in place.
Fracking does not directly affect the Market Rasen area - but it is a major issue in the Gainsborough area where gas deposits have been discovered. This is why local parliamentary candidates are commenting on this matter.
