Gainsborough MP Sir Edward Leigh has quizzed transport minister Claire Perry on the need for a better train service to Market Rasen.

After the minister told parliament “major service enhancements” providing 24 extra trains a week from May on the Nottingham to Lincoln line had been announced a week before, Sir Edward said her “wrongheaded advisors” had made “an oversight” in not including the through train to Cleethorpes and Grimsby via Market Rasen as part of the bid to run the east coast line.

“Will she put pressure on the bidders to ensure that the through train that we used to have, and which is vital to our Lincolnshire economy, is included?” he asked.

The minister replied she had only stood on Cleethorpes the week before, riding the line herself and being made “fully aware of the strength of feeling about it. Bids are being currently assessed, and I am looking forward to publishing further information in December. It is clear that we need investment in those areas of the north.”
