Middle Rasen & District Horticultural Society’s 47th Annual Sweet Pea & Summer Early Flower Show was held on Saturday, with the wonderful aroma filling the air as visitors entered the village hall.
Although the growers had been struggling with the cold evenings, which can cause bud drop, the growers put on a wonderful display, with a representative from the National Sweet Pea Society describing it as one of the best village shows of this type that you could visit.
“It is very commendable that the village is still able to put on this wonderful show,” said society president Joyce Rhodes.
“Thank you to all who supported the event, especially to the exhibitors and in particular the growers of the wonderful sweet peas.”
Presenting the trophies was the Rev Anne Coates and the winners were: Village Hall Cup – John Bennett; Ashfield Trophy - William Pickwell; Society’s shield – Bryan Jepson; NSPS Bronze Medal – Bryan Jepson; NSPS Bronze Certificate for Best Vase of Sweet Peas exhibited – Bryan Jepson; Novices Award, Sweet Peas - Alan Toplis; Vice President’s Vase – Gina Waite; Best Exhibit Floral Art – Rita Goulsbra; Best Exibit in Show – Rita Goulsbra; Sylvia Pilley Memorial Salver – John Bennett; Sylvia Pilley Memorial Salver for One Specimen Rose – Derek Richardson; Best Exhibit in the Children’s Classes – Katrina Egon; Charles Hanmer Trophy – Brian Jepson; Charles Hanmer Tankard - John Bennett.
