Bigby woman Jean Bartle, for many years the star of Brigg Operatic Society shows, has died.
Born in July 1929, she lived in Brigg and the surrounding area all of her life.
She married Horace Bartle in 1950 and they had three children - Gillian, Rachel and Pru.
They were happily married for 54 years until Horace’s death in 2004.
Jean Bartle joined the operatic society in 1951 when she took the part of ‘Fleta’ in ‘Iolanthe’.
Many parts followed this impressive debut, her lovely soprano singing voice and relaxed acting on stage delighting many an audience.
Roles that followed included Anna in ‘The Merry Widow’(pictured), Kate in ‘Kiss me Kate’, Eliza Doolittle in ‘My Fair Lady’, Carmen in ‘Passion Flower’, Nettie in ‘Carousel’ and Mame in ‘Mame’ to name but a few.
Her last show was in 1990 ‘Bless the Bride’.
Husband Horace was Secretary and Chairman of the society and when times were hard and men were in short supply, he trod the boards as well.
Jean then joined the Harlequin Theatre Company with daughter Rachel as Musical Director and Ricky Price as producer and choreographer.
She worked as Practise Manager for Bridge Street Surgery for 20 years until her retirement in 1994.
