An urgent appeal for winter clothing, shoes and blankets has been made by Market Rasen’s churches.
Church leaders have been so moved by first hand accounts of desperate conditions in refugee camps in Northern Iraq that they are organising an emergency truckload of winter clothing this week.
Children are running around in the thin summer clothes they escaped in with bare feet, babies are dying of the cold and parents are desperate to keep their families warm and fed. Many displaced families are living in tents and others in unfinished buildings open to the elements.
The churches are asking for Used winter clothes in excellent condition, washed, winter/leather shoes (paired) in excellent condition complete with laces, new clothes – please label clearly “new clothes”, new shoes – please label clearly “new shoes”, mattresses that are stain free, wheelchairs in good working order, paired crutches, zimmer frames, sleeping bags with working zips that are clean and in good condition, blankets, washed, and in good condition, new underwear (with tags or in packaging only), essential baby items
Good quality items can be brought to any local church this Sunday, January 18th or to The Salvation Army at anytime in the week labelled “Winter Clothing for Iraq”. The Churches are organising transport to Brighton for shipment to Iraq on Tuesday January.
