Senior Liberal-Democrat county and district councillor Reg Shore has pulled out of the race to be the party’s general election candidate for the Gainsborough constituency.
“The selection procedure has been far too protracted for me and frankly is not leaving enough time to make a fight of it. The selection team have clearly found the challenge of a timely operation too much; this could and should have been completed in November last year. I wish the best for whoever is eventually selected,” he said.
The move was greeted with surprise by fellow councillor Lesley Rollings, who has since been touted as a potential candidate for the seat.
“I’m not an approved candidate. I’m going to have to give it some careful consideration,” she added.
Market Rasen-based Guy Grainger, secretary of East Midlands Liberal Democrats, expects the party will chose a candidate in February. “It’s a matter of going through the processes. We don’t need to rush things.”
