Brigg’s Millennium Green is to be taken over by the Town Council.

Town Mayor John Kitwood told the monthly Town Council meeting the Millennium Green Trust could not continue to operate as it had no funds to pay the annual insurance cover for 2014-15.

“If the council takes over the Millennium Green then our third party liability cover will cover the Green at no extra cost,” said the Mayor.

T he Green is already being maintained by local council management, with grass cutting and litter management taking place as needed.

The ‘green’ was created on waste ground on Elwes Street as a Millennium Project in the town 14 years ago.

Various voluntary groups were involved such as local Scouts and guides and it was opened on time with an official ceremony and dancing on the ‘green.’

In more recent years, the trust committee has struggled for numbers but the mowing and maintenance was still carried out by volunteers until three years ago.

Coun Mike Campion told the meeting: “If we don’t take it on the Green will become an eyesore. A lot of people in the town have taken on voluntary work there and we cannot let their efforts from the past go to waste.”
