Veterans return for annual 101 reunion event

A remarkable link between a Wolds village and a wartime squadron continues as strong as ever at Ludford.

On Sunday, the annual 101 Squadron Association event was held to remember those who flew from the wartime base and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

As always, the day began with a service in the church, followed by wreath laying at the Squadron memorial in the main street.

This year, 101 Squadron Association has launched a fundraising campaign to get a permanent memorial at the National Arboretum.

“The Squadron has been in existence for 100 years on July 17 2017 and we want to mark that by commissioning a piece to honour those who have served and lost their lives with 101 Squadron across the 100 years,” said Association chairman John Ager.

“We are looking to raise £10,000 over the next year towards the total cost.

“The village memorial will still be our main memorial for World War Two service - Ludford will always be our spiritual home.

“We are incredibly grateful for the local support we have here.”
