Lots of people make resolutions as a new year begins, but one Caistor couple have set themselves a truly marathon challenge.

Keith and Linda Tyler are no strangers when it comes to long distance runs, but this year they have decided to step things up a gear.

Their ‘Mine’s a Half’ running challenge will see the intrepid couple run a minimum distance race of a half marathon - 13.1 miles - for each and every month in 2015.

And it is all in a good cause - Prostate Cancer UK, a charity particularly significant to Keith as his brother Lenny passed away after succumbing to this terrible disease.

“It was Linda’s idea to set ourselves this huge and very tough challenge, but it is for a very worthy cause,” said Keith, a veteran of 37 full international marathon runs, some as far away as Beijing in the east, to Honolulu in the west.

Linda too has run 24 full marathons since she took up running just 14 years ago.

They have yet to complete their programme of race entries for the latter half of the year, but where race entries have already opened they have committed themselves to those - including three full marathons for Keith and two for Linda.

And the first of those challenges is this Sunday, January 18, when they take on the Brass Monkey half marathon in York and Keith admits they are getting a little nervous about the task ahead of them.

“We are no strangers to marathon running, but as you get a little older each year it becomes difficult to avoid the inevitable injuries, and those injuries take longer to heal,” he said.

“Now, as a 68-year-old, it becomes hard to stay injury free.”

After the York event, next month will see them take part in the Sleaford half marathon and in March they will run two events - Newton’s Fraction Half Marathon in Grantham and East Hull 20-mile race.

The first of the marathon distances will be in Paris in April and they will be heading to Venice in October for another full marathon.

Other events are the North Lincolnshire half marathon and the Liverpool Rock & Roll events.

“Last year was a difficult year for both of us with many a training mile missed through injury problems,” said Linda.

“However, we are both determined to attempt this terrific challenge, and continue to support this great charity.”
