  • ‘Mine’s a Half’ challenge has mixed results for running couple

A Caistor couple have been looking back on a year that has seen them running with a challenge to support Prostate Cancer UK.

At the beginning of 2015, Keith and Linda Tyler set themselves the ‘Mine’s a Half’ challenge, which would see the intrepid running duo take on at least one half marathon distance every month of the year.

“We are no strangers to marathon running, but as you get a little older each year, it becomes difficult to avoid the inevitable injuries,” said Keith when he announced the challenge back in January 2015.

“Now, as a 68 year old, it becomes hard to stay injury free.”

That comment proved to be prophetic, with Keith being plagued by injury throughout the year.

The first run of the year, York’s Brass Monkey half marathon, saw Keith retire after just 200 yards, due to the return of a previous injury.

However, the event saw Linda get off to a flying start, not only setting a personal best time for a half-marathon distance, but also breaking their running club’s Ladies 60+ Veteran record of 2hrs 10mins 19secs.

Keith joined Linda for the Sleaford half-marathon in February and the Grantham Newton’s Fraction Half Marathon in March before injury struck again, meaning he missed the Paris marathon.

Again, Linda excelled, with another personal best time of 4hrs 49mins 59secs and another club record.

Having been told not to run, Keith developed his power-walking technique which enabled him to take part in May and June’s events.

Sadly in July he had to withdraw completely from the challenge, but Linda saw the year through, including the Venice marathon and the Turkey Trot in December, dressed in a Santa outfit.

“Although it was a disappointing year for me, it was a fabulous effort by Linda,” added Keith.

“Not only did Linda complete each and every race, but she recorded personal best times along the way, setting new club records for Cleethorpes Athletics Club.

“We are delighted to have exceeded our original £300 target, raising a splendid total of £495.03 (including Gift Aid).”
