A former Market Rasen schoolboy has shot to the top of Amazon’s bestsellers lists with his book about life in the British Army.
Ashley Topham, now 49, spent 24 years in the armed forces, rising through the ranks from private to regimental sergeant major.
He decided to pen his experiences after spotting a gap in the market for a book from a soldier’s, rather than a general’s, point of view.
But the book’s success has taken Ashley by surprise.
He said: “I wrote my book, The Badge, because I thought I had an interesting story to tell.
“I’m shocked by how well it’s doing. I’m just over the moon.”
As well as enjoying success in Britain, Ashley has even sold copies in America and Australia.
It is number one in two of Amazon’s war bestsellers lists and so far has got only five star reviews.
Ashley, who is now a tree surgeon in Nottinghamshire, said: “I think my family get bored of me going on about it but I just can’t believe it’s doing so well.
“I’m not a trained author. It’s just written from my point of view.”
