A well-known Rasen couple have celebrated 60 years of marriage this week.

John and Jean Burkitt have lived in The Ridings in
Market Rasen for the last 10 years and celebrated their special day at home with an open-house to their many friends and family.

And the diamond couple really do have a lifetime of memories together to look back on.

John, aged 22, and Jean, aged 24, were married at St Margaret’s Church, Laceby, on June 8, 1955, and begun their married life in Normanby by Spital.

John was a cattle dealer at neighbouring Owmby and also kept sheep, winning many prizes.

He has been a member of the Agricultural Society for more than 60 years, acting as a cattle steward at the county show for 25 of them.

And John remains keen to be ready to help and serve his local community – he has been a governor at Normanby School for 50 years.

For Jean, time was spent looking after the family – daughter Louise, now married to Rasen butcher Richard Lancaster, and son Andrew. The couple also have seven grandchildren.

“The most important things in our lives are our children and grandchildren; we have a wonderful family,” said Jean, who has belonged to local flower clubs for more than 50 years.

And the secret to this long and happy marriage?

“Don’t talk too much,” quipped John.
