Long serving President of the Ancholme Rowing Club Mike Hookham has died.
Born in 1937, Mr Hookham was brought up in Brigg where he attended Brigg Grammar School.
He qualified as a teacher of maths and taught for many years at the North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe.
For two years he did national service in the RAF and was stationed at Binbrook.
Rowing became his great love and he was a member of the Ancholme Club for most of his adult life.
He was President for more than 20 years, only retiring after illness in 2013, and he was a familiar face at the popular spring event, the Scrumpy Row, held in April, as well as the Head of the River Race in October.
He had a great love of music, playing the piano accordion and even tried playing bagpipes with the Scunthorpe Pipe Band.
He enjoyed classical music and also enjoyed reading and learning about topics such as arctic exploration.
Well known as a genial and friendly man, he was good company for many in the town, serving as a town councillor, or more informally over a ‘pint’ in the Yarborough Hunt.
A funeral service was held at Scunthorpe Crematorium.
