IT was time to go quackers at Middle Rasen as the annual New Year’s Day duck race got under way.

A large crowd gathered as always for this highlight of the winter calendar and the honour of being the official starter this year went to five-year-old Cian Friend.

The race saw 1,200 bright yellow ducks travel down the River Rase from Parry’s Bridge on Low Church Road to the Church Street Bridge near Naylors Drive.

The first three ducks over the winning line were Daffy (826) owned by Jade Pennell, who received £100, in second spot was Chip (645) and in third (1056) Cornish Crock, whose owners won £50 and £25.

Owners of the last three ducks taken from the river were Liam Oxley (Damien 982), John Stead (Sparkey Duck 130) and Mike Olda (Megan 1578), who each received £10.

Following the race spectators made their way to the Nags Head to enjoy mulled wine, tea, coffee and mince pies while waiting expectantly to see if they had been successful on the raffle.

The duck race was organised by the village’s Cricket and Football Club and sponsored by Equip, Rasen Appliance Services and Bed Supplies, Park View Motors (Market Rasen), Nigel Appleyard (Pressure Washing Services), Nags Head and Green Grass Contracting.
