A TEALBY teenager has been selected for the British U21 eventing team, who are looking to retain their European title this week.
Gina Ruck is part of the six horse and rider squad who flew out to Sweden at the weekend to prepare for the competition, which begins on August 9.
The 19-year-old was part of last year’s U21 squad, which competed in Scotland, and this year Gina is aiming high.
“Last year was a good experience,” she said.
“I am really loking forward to competing in Sweden and it would be good for the team to get a medal.”
The final team selection of four will be made just before the competition begins and Gina is hoping she will make the team, along with her 10-year-old bay gelding Viper Priba, known as News.
Gina has been riding since she was nine years old and at the age of 14 made the U16 eventing squad. She has since competed in many competitions both at home and across Europe.
“This year my ultimate goal is to get a gold at the Europeans, but my overall target is of course to make it to the Olympic team once I have a bit more experience,” added Gina.
Meanwhile, Gina continues to live and breathe horses - as well as competing, she is busy setting up her new livery stables near to home.
And throughout, Gina has been grateful for the support she has had from her parents.
Mum Lesley has been heavily involved with Gina’s progress over the years.
“We are really proud of what Gina has achieved so far,” she said,
“However, it is such an expensive sport to take part in and we are always looking for new sponsors.”
