Get active to grab an Olympics 2012 grant

An Olympic and Paralympic inspired project has received £150 worth of funding.

Newtoft Methodist Church near Market Rasen has been awarded £150 to run an Olympic inspired open day of activities in Spring 2012.

The church aims to promote community cohesion, using the Olympic and Paralympic Games as inspiration.

The money has been funded through a Lincolnshire Sports Partnership project called Silver Spirit, which awards grants of up to £300 to community groups and organisations whose members are mostly aged over 50 years, and want to run Olympic and Paralympic inspired projects in the run up to the 2012 Games.

Sarah Ferneyhough, physical activity manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Silver Spirit provides a great opportunity for the older generation to get actively involved with the 2012 Games and run events and projects inspired by the Olympics or Paralympics.

“We were delighted to offer funding to the Newtoft Methodist Church and hope that the day of activities brings the local community together and inspires more people about the Games.”

Coun Sue Woolley, executive councillor for health, housing and community, at Lincolnshire County Council said: “The London 2012 Games is an excellent opportunity to inspire more people to get out and get active.

“Staying active is essential to maintaining health and fitness, particularly for the over 50s.

“That’s why I’m delighted this money has been made available to help older members of our communities celebrate next year’s games in a fit and fun way.

“Make sure you get involved in what’s happening in your area.”

More than £5,000 has been awarded to 27 projects throughout Lincolnshire since the programme was launched in June, but £10,000 is available in the run-up to the 2012 Games, so more projects in the county can be funded.

Groups can apply for funding for one off activities, or ask for support to pay for a series of sessions or longer term project that could last all year.

The next deadline for applications is January 31.
