Market Rasen’s popular free parking faces a potential threat from a district-wide review of parking charges.
West Lindsey District Council will discuss the matter today, with a council report saying a review on council parking charges must be completed by the end of October. No time frame has been given for any potential changes, or recommendations made yet, which might clash with Market Rasen’s ‘Portas Town’ status and its philosophy that small town high streets need free parking to survive.
Market Rasen Town and district councillor Ken Bridger says Market Rasen is the only town in West Lindsey with free parking, which some in Gainsborough say is unfair.
Coun Bridger was unsure what the review might deliver, but the issue was “always sitting in the background.”
“Having free parking is a luxury especially nowadays. Each space in the town centre is losing £46 a week. Things are desperate in councils. Things are being cut back. Everything has to pay for itself,” he said.
