A former company director who had been reported as a missing person shot himself in the head at a hotel car park, an inquest heard.

Stewart Page, 60, from Cuxwold, near Caistor, had been reported to police as a missing person early last month.

He was discovered on Remembrance Day, Sunday November 11, at the Briarfields Hotel in the quiet village of Titchwell in Norfolk.

The inquest was told that while in the hotel car park Mr Page walked to his car where he picked up a firearm and shot himself in the head.

Paramedics attended but despite attempts at resuscitation, confirmed his death at the scene.

A post mortem examination has been carried out by Dr Cary whose report to the coroner stated the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

Mr Page’s death was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for assessment due to “previous police contact”. It has since been passed back to Norfolk Police for local investigation.

Mr Page was a director of Page 1 Publications, which dissolved in 2005 after a court order to wind up.

His death has left villagers in Titchwell shocked.

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It is very unusual.

“This is a quiet village and we don’t expect this sort of thing.

“I heard the sirens coming down the road and the helicopter arriving so it was clear that something was wrong.”

A Norfolk Police spokesman said: “Officers attended an address at Main Road, Titchwell, at 1.50pm on Sunday (November 11) after concerns were raised for the safety of a male.”

The inquest into the death of Mr Page was opened by HM Assistant Deputy Coroner David Osborne in Norwich on Thursday and has been adjourned.
