MARKET Rasen Station Adoption Group is to be used as a beacon to encourage other community groups to take pride in their surroundings.
The group’s continuing good work was praised by managers of East Midlands Trains, who hold the service franchise.
“I am very proud to have responsibility for Market Rasen,” said customer services manager Sherry Hartman.
“I now want to try and build what this group has done in to other people.”
And station manager Michelle Portas said she was delighted Market Rasen had won the community award.
“We have seen passenger numbers increase at Market Rasen and that is due in no small part to MRSAG making the station more welcoming,” she said.
At the recent meeting to celebrate this latest award, the volunteers were already talking about the next stage of work for the station.
Headed up by garden designer Michelle Boulton, a new sustainable planting scheme is planned, as well as planters on the approach road to be maintained by the town’s primary school.
But as always, group chairman John Skelton is looking at the bigger picture.
“We will have steam trains in Rasen yet,” he said.
“I would like to see a regular Sunday service to take people to the seaside and also a charter steam service.
“We also need to look at services to tie in with the race meetings.”
Michelle Portas told the group: “You have the power to influence your service.”
“Now is the time to work at getting councils on board to look at what is wanted in the next franchise deal.”
