Get steamed up about nation’s railway heritage

THERE is still time to go full steam ahead and sign up for the latest course on offer from Nettleton WEA.

Starting on January 25, Railway byways of Britain and Ireland will be tutored by Neil Burgess over eight meetings in Nettleton Methodist Hall, 7.30pm-9.30pm.

The course explores Britain and Ireland’s rich heritage of secondary railway lines, both standard and narrow gauge, and traces their rise, their brief heyday in the years before 1914, and their long decline until many succumbed to closure during the 1950s and 1960s.

It also looks at how a significant number have been given a new lease of life as preserved ‘heritage’ lines.

The cost is £53.60 full fee, £48.25 discounted, or free.
