A SINGLE mother from Market Rasen has become the only British person to be nominated for an international refereeing award.
Not long ago Danielle Curzon, from Willingham Road, became Europe’s first ever female televised cage fighting referee – and now the 28-year-old is in the running to be crowned Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Referee of the Year.
Mother of two-year-old Alea, Danielle, got involved in cage fighting – a sport that involves all types of martial arts and takes place in a cage – just six months ago but has done other similar sports such as kick boxing since she was 12 years old.
She said: “It’s quite an honour to even be nominated. I’m up against some very well established American referees so I’ll be pleased if I finish in the top three.
“I’ve had some fantastic support over the past few months and a lot of doors have been opened for me. I’m just really happy with how it’s going and am excited for what’s in store in 2012.”
And the professional referee will be flying out to America next month to take part in what she says is of of the world’s top cage fighting refereeing courses.
Danielle, who works in various places around the UK and Europe, said: “I do most of my work at weekends so I’m able to spend a lot of time with my daughter during the week.
“A lot of people have judged me for being a woman in a man’s world but I just let that go over my head. It’s a great sport, more woman should get involved.”
You can watch Danielle refereeing for UCMMA Cage Rage on Sky Sports 3 on Saturday, February 4 at 10pm.
