FRAUDSTERS claiming to be from national government bodies are trying to con people out of their hard-earned cash, Lincolnshire Trading Standards warns.
The watchdog has received scores of complaints from people who have been contacted by phoney officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Office of Fair Trading.
The people have been contacted by phone and told that they are owed large amounts of money by the Government.
To release the funds, the unsuspecting victim is asked to carry out some instructions, usually involving paying an upfront fee.
Lincolnshire Trading Standards is urging people to ignore the imposters and warning against transferring money in the hope of getting more back.
“The intention of the scam is to persuade someone to send money on the promise of a larger return,” says Mark Keal, service manager from Lincolnshire Trading Standards.
“Just because someone tells you they’re from a prominent organisation doesn’t mean they actually are.”
Anyone who believes that they have been the victim of a scam, can call 01522 782341.
