Eight in the dock for alleged £1m fraud

Eight people from the Market Rasen area have appeared at Leeds Crown Court charged with VAT and tax fraud in excess of £1m.

Among the people charged is Market Rasen town councillor David Strachan, 48.

The others are Michael Wilmot, 70, of Low Road, Market Rasen, Charles Trafford, 58, Osgodby, Derek Blackburn, 58, of Station Road, Moortown, Tracie Morton, 49, of Toft next Newton, Michael Taylor, 37, of Waterloo Street, Market Rasen, John Raithby, 57, of Snitterby Road, Waddingham and Mary Tompkins, of Little Tows, Ludford.

All eight were charged after a series of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) raids as part of an investigation into illicit fuel use and VAT fraud in Lincolnshire.

The defendants had been due to enter pleas at Leeds Crown Court on Friday, May 17, but this did not go ahead.

The accused are now due to enter their pleas at Leeds Crown Court on Friday June 28.

A provisional date for a trial has been set for January 13 next year.

The case has been adjourned.
