Claudia Burkill, the Market Rasen girl who touched the hearts of the nation with her battle against cancer, died at the weekend.
Little Claudia was aged just eight, four months after being told she was clear of the rare cancer - a world first.
“Claudia died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of this morning. Despite her long illness, ultimately, her death is an incredible shock to all that know and love her,” mum Annie Burkill posted on the Claudia’s Cause Facebook site.
Requesting privacy for the family, Mrs Burkill said their “lives have just been destroyed in an instant.”
The plight of tragic Claudia made international headlines, especially when in June it was reported she had beaten metastatic pineoblastoma (a brain tumour).
Parents Dave and Annie had been told several times that Claudia would shortly die since she was first diagnosed aged 5, but brave Claudia always battled through until Saturday.
The couple shared their ups and downs of Claudia’s ongoing battle against illness on their Facebook page.
The page attracted more than 320,000 likes, with tributes flooding onto the website since her death was announced.
